Psychological profiles show what makes candidates tick

Aubrey Immelman, associate professor  of psychology at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., is nationally recognized  for his psychological assessments of political candidates. His profiles attempt to predict political performance and leadership effectiveness based on personality characteristics. For example, Immelman's 1996 study of President Clinton predicted that he "would likely continue to display his driving ambition, supreme self-confidence, and personal charisma," but would be "troubled by ethical questions and lapses of judgment."

Twelve months before the November 2000 election, Immelman and students in the Unit for the Study of Personality in Politics began to analyze major political candidates. Times readers will see those assessments regularly until the election, and we'll compile the profiles here throughout the election year.
